Honorable Mention
Woman with the White Veil
Michael MV

. . and on the way up
to the hill of skulls
the Messiah is approached by a young
widowed mother flowing through the ranks

with a white veil
woven only by her own hands

the lady washes the face of the Lord
soothing as a wet nurse
so He leaves on her veil
more than merely a pale imprint

for this man whom they think
they are going to kill is God
incarnate

resolution greater than a hologram
that's hi-tech mirage
Jesus doesn't do magic
He makes miracles

now upon the gossamer
fantasy fashioned to flesh
moving in-the-round

the face of Jesus
Christ still breathing from her veil

swollen shut in the sockets
the unrenderable eyes
of the Son open

focused & arresting
the woman screams
in a vacuum

as if cast to stone
transfixed by a deja-vu
she had destined as the feat of her faith
she has met her match

. . . responding to the moans of agony
she returns to with tears
takes the sacred cloth to her breast
and His anguish ceases
to be no longer in vain

His aspect again sistine
like the pieta
vision exceding dream

. . . but then the pagan centurions
seeing the image is identical on both sides
want to rob the lady of the living relic
they think they are going to change
the mystical into spectacle for profit?

spears lances swords and stones
all go up
but freeze in mid-aim
the children have circled around her
and all arms freeze in mid-aim

. . . and the children
an amazing vigilante
fearlessly enchanted & far from harm
the woman reaches refuge
resting at home
with the presence of the Savior
wrapped all around her
breathing long with the light

never a shroud for her
it is only just
like a great warm white wind
